UPDATE: CBST Preaches Love Against Hate
CBST members, our neighbors and community supporters countered a hatemongering protest from a Kansas-based religious group with a prayer vigil and rally early Sunday, raising $10,000.
“Anyone who uses anti-gay rhetoric in the name of God is blaspheming God’s name. We will not ignore those who would spew hateful words. It is not often too long until those on the fringe may put down their signs and take up a gun," said Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum, who urged synagogue members to stand together in the face of hateful speech at our synagogue.
"There are too many people all over the world -- Christians, Muslims, and Jews who are using religion as a force of hatred. We reject that," she said.
The handful of protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church waving placards on the West Side Highway at Bethune Street were met by a much larger contingent of singing, banner-waving CBST supporters, including City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.
"I hope they see from the good people standing here in front of them how misguided they are and they leave here today with a sense of faith and community as that's the folks who are standing behind us," said Quinn.
