How Can I Get Involved

How Can I Get Involved

Torah Writing Days and Dedications.

There are many ways to be involved in the Torah Project, all of which allow us to engage with the Torah in new and personal ways. Through study, tzedakah, and actually writing a letter of our Torah scroll, each of us can encounter Torah and explore it on our own terms, and with our own hands.

Perhaps you have always felt connected to your bar/bat mitzvah portion or to one pasuk, verse, that inspires you most. Maybe there’s a section you want to reclaim by studying it closely or by dedicating it. Perhaps you have never really studied Torah before, or held a Torah scroll before. This project is your invitation to claim the Torah as your own.

Torah Writing Days

There will be opportunities to participate in one of at least three community Torah writing days that will take place over the next six months. Each member can write a letter in the Torah, regardless of ability to donate. (That makes CBST different from some synagogues, which allow only contributors to participate.) Of course, there is no charge for fulfilling this mitzvah.

Torah Writing Dates:

  • Wednesday, February 24, 2010 (including afternoon families with children programming)
  • Sunday, March 21, 2010, program for families with children at 2:30pm, letter writing from 3:30-6:30pm, evening program with soferet Jen Taylor Friedman at 7:00pm
  • Wednesday, April 14, 2010 (including afternoon families with children programming)
  • Thursday, April 15, 2010

Dedications

Another vital way to bring our Torah to life is by contributing to the many costs associated with its production. Here, there are a host of dedication opportunities. You can dedicate an entire book of the Torah, a day of creation, a commandment that motivates you or one that calls out for new interpretation. (Since we are not “selling” sections of the Torah, individual verses, letters or books may be dedicated by more than one individual or household.) Also, we are an LGBTQ synagogue, so there will be lots of accessories to dedicate: new Torah mantles, binders and pointers, plus lots and lots of spangles on the crown. Even children can become sponsors, for $6.13 each.
