Community
At CBST, we believe it is important to foster a sense of camaraderie and community, and there are many opportunities for you to form social ties with fellow members.
First Fridays
Come to “First Friday” services, the first Friday of each month; following services join with congregants, guests, and clergy for kiddush and a shmooze .
Wednesday: Lunch at the Dish
From discussion of LGBT anti-discrimination laws to debates about Israeli politics, The Dish group is sure to make your lunch hour more enjoyable. The group meets upstairs at The Dish restaurant, 8th Avenue and West 21st Street, every Wednesday at noon.

UPDATE: Visit the new Strength Through Community Website.
We have experienced the power of community. Now we can share that with those in need around the country and the world. The Strength Through Community project is CBST's response to the needs of those in crisis in the LGBTQ community around the world, through the extension of an invitation to our community and communities like our around the world, and the sharing of resources and best practices with leaders of progressive communities.
No one should feel alone. CBST is here for you whether you live alone, or have plenty of support. Chesed is about the smallest efforts — having someone call to say hello, sending a card, or coming to read the newspaper to a homebound person. This is holy work. Whether you are able to help or are in need please let us know so we can work together to create a Kehillah Kedoshah, a holy community.
Through a series of community events, including movies screenings, speakers, and facilitated conversations we are working to create space for discussion and reflection on Israel, the Palestinian people and the conflict. We are working to build community by exploring our differing opinions.
CBST recently launched a relationship with StoryCorps—one of America’s largest oral history projects—as a means of recording the personal stories that make up the collective memoirs/oral history of the synagogue.
Get up and get out! Fun, social and cultural events focusing on people aged 21 to 39 (give or take.) Monthly dinner-mixers and happy-hours all over town. Single-gender and mixed-gender events. Theatre and museum outings. For couples and singles. CBST membership is not required; join us for fun!
A social group for CBSTers in their 40s and 50s.
The Mishpachah is a CBST social/cultural group. Its diverse, mainly informal, activities generally attract men and women over age 50, but younger people and younger friends do participate and are always welcome. We are truly intergenerational.
One of the most dramatic changes over the last 10 years has been the number of members who have welcomed children into their lives. It is the hope of CBST that these children – by being welcomed and supported by a Jewish community in which all family structures are valued – will grow up with a positive sense of their Jewish identities and, in their own ways, go on to create a more tolerant world.
CBST is a home for people of all gender identities and expressions. From our liturgy to our bathrooms to our rituals and social justice work, we are actively engaged in affirming the lives of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.
