Tzedek, Tzedek Tirdof: Justice on Your Seder Plate
"For the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life." -Proverbs, 11:30
This year, bring some contemporary justice to your Passover table. Some people put an orange on the seder plate to represent the fruitful inclusion of LGBTQ people while spitting out the seeds of homophobia. Another option is to put a Miriam's Cup beside Elijah's cup and fill it with water to represent Miriam's well and the presence of women's voices at the table. Jewish Voice for Peace recommends an olive on the seder plate to symbolize peace and reconciliation because olive trees grow in the lands of Israel and Palestine. Or try using a beet as a vegetarian alternative to a shankbone! Feeling really daring? Try them all.
