Tisha B'Av, July 29 and 30

On Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar, we mourn the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem. The Ninth of Av has come to signify a day of disaster in Jewish tradition, and other historical Jewish tragedies are associated with the day as well.

It is said that the Second Temple was destroyed because "sinat chinam" — senseless hatred — prevailed in the culture of the Jews. In our times, we are still aware of the ugliness and dangers of sinat chinam . We pray that each of us will take this time to reflect on the need for peace and tolerance within the Jewish world and beyond.

How Can I Be Your Witness?" (Lam 2:13)
Biblical Poets and Rabbinic Storytellers on Destruction and Re-Building
Rabbi Jo Hirschmann
Wednesday, July 29
7:30 pm

How did the writers of the Bible and rabbinic midrashim (stories that elaborate on the biblical text) respond to the great disasters of ancient Jewish life - the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 587 BCE and again in 70 CE? The biblical book of Lamentations and the compilation of rabbinic midrashim known as Lamentations Rabbah record these destructions and the peoples' subsequent suffering and grief. In this class, we will explore laments, protests, and stories about loss and re-building and ask what they teach us about our own lives and times.

Free of charge. Bring your own dinner; we will study and eat together in preparation for the fast.

Jo Hirschmann is a CBST member and newly-ordained Reform rabbi. In September, she will begin work as a chaplain resident at Westchester Medical Center. As a student, she served synagogues in Lock Haven, PA and Woodstock, VT. She also worked as a chaplain at Bellevue and New York Hospitals and as a pastoral counselor at DOROT. Prior to going to rabbinical school, she spent ten years working at non-profits addressing homelessness and criminal justice reform.
