Our Community, Our Survey, Our Stories
"I don’t want to go back into the closet when I grow old."
"He had no medical proxy in place. His parents, who were ashamed of his “lifestyle,” moved him out of New York, away from the friends who visited him daily. A week later, on his 35th birthday, he died."
"Because I wasn’t the biological parent, I was always afraid that if something happened to our daughter, I wouldn’t be authorized to make medical decisions for her."
These stories are some of the reasons that CBST’s social justice group Koleinu : Health Care/Elder Care Committee (HC/EC) decided to conduct a synagogue-wide survey. “We needed the hard data to back up what we knew to be true,” one member of HC/EC said. The survey results identified some of the most pressing health concerns facing the CBST community and helped inform the HC/EC’s next steps.
The results of the survey are available. Pick up a copy at our Chelsea location at Friday night services. HC/EC is sponsoring a shmooze following services on December 9th to discuss the survey and report back to the community about future plans. Please join us.
