Rabbi Cohen's Welcome to Lehrhaus

We welcome all learners to CBST’s LGBT Lehrhaus Judaica. Whatever your Jewish background, your gender identity, your age, or your sexual orientation, we invite you to our classrooms to expand yourselves through knowledge.

People come to CBST’s Lehrhaus to learn, but even more significantly, they come to connect with others. Here we can ask the questions that challenge us, trouble us, and inspire us, and in so doing create an intimate community of learners within the larger CBST community. Here we can study Judaism on our own terms, claim its sacred texts as our own, and take our own place among the countless generations of Jewish learners. Each one of us who enters a classroom at CBST is a teacher as well as a student. Here we honor our own life experiences and include them in the ongoing narrative of Jewish life.

This year each of us will have the opportunity to encounter Torah in the most intimate way, literally inscribing a letter in CBST’s new Torah scroll as a part of our new Torah Project. The new Torah, made possible by a bequest of CBST member Myrna Reich z”l, is being written in celebration of our 36th Anniversary. We begin a new Adult B’nai Mitzvah cohort and offer classes and special events exploring various aspects of Torah, Jewish identity, and the arts. I hope you will join us.

Our Lehrhaus program could not exist without the hard work of our education committee. As always, I offer them my profound thanks and affection.
