Tisha B'av Service
Aug 8, 2011 - 9:00 pm
Bethune Sanctuary
57 Bethune Street
On Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the month of Av in the Jewish calendar, we mourn the destruction of the Temples in Jerusalem. The Ninth of Av has come to signify a day of disaster in Jewish tradition, and other historical Jewish tragedies are associated with the day as well.
It is said that the Second Temple was destroyed because "sinat chinam" - senseless hatred - prevailed in the culture of the Jews. In our times, we are still aware of the ugliness and dangers of sinat chinam. We pray that each of us will take this time to reflect on the need for peace and tolerance within the Jewish world and beyond.
