Johanna Reiss was born Jewish in the Netherlands and spent a number of her childhood years during World War II in hiding. After the war, Ms. Reiss completed her education and in 1955 came to America for what was supposed to have been a one-year visit. She married an American and stayed to raise two daughters in New York. She has published three books: The Uptstairs Room , about her years in hiding, The Journey Back , about what it was like to be free again, and A Hidden Life, a Memoir of August 1969 , in which she tries to shed light on her husband’s suicide. Johanna will discuss how her husband’s death impacted her life, and what it was like to write about it.
