CBST is happy to join AJWS in observing Global Hunger Shabbat -a day of solidarity, education, reflection and activism to raise awareness about global hunger.

This is an opportunity for CBST to join Jews nationwide to raise our collective voices against the injustice that is claiming lives around the world. Global Hunger Shabbat is part of AJWS's campaign, Fighting Hunger from the Ground Up.

Humberto Cruz is the Director of the AIDS Institute of the NYS Department of Health,Humberto Cruz after 17 years in progressively responsible positions. As an individual living with AIDS and as a public health professional, Mr. Cruz is personally and professionally committed to achieving the AIDS Institute's goals. As an executive committee member of the National Alliance of State and Territorial AIDS Directors, he has deliberated HIV/AIDS policy at the national level, most recently in support of New Yorkers with HIV/AIDS in the context of Ryan White legislative reauthorization. He understands the perspectives of persons living with the virus, the providers who care for them, and state officials who must develop the policies and programs that guide service provision.

The core of CBST's religious life is our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat service.

Service leadership at the Chelsea location is shared among congregants, Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum and Rabbi Ayelet Cohen, and our Cooperberg-Rittmaster Rabbinical Interns. Joyce Rosenzweig, our music director and pianist, and the CBST Community Chorus participate in the service on a regular basis. Led using CBST's own prayer book, this warm service incorporates Hebrew prayers, English readings, and both traditional and modern songs. A drash is delivered every week by one of the Rabbis, an intern, a member of the congregation, or on occasion, by a special guest. The kiddush that follows each service provides an opportunity to meet new people and connect with old friends.
