Marriage Equality Passes in New York!
All the hard work that everyone has done fighting for marriage equality in New York has finally paid off! On Friday, New York State Senators voted to approve marriage equality in New York State. Now, New York State is a huge step closer to achieving equal rights for all its citizens.
We are grateful for all the work that everyone has done to work toward equality in New York. We are grateful for governor Cuomo’s work persistently advocating for marriage equality and sending New York’s gay marriage bill to the state legislature. We are grateful for all the many representatives who voted in support of marriage equality, and all of the organizations that have fought so hard to make this happen. And we are grateful for each one of you, for supporting the LGBTQ community and CBST’s vision of equality for all.
Here at CBST, we’ve been performing gay marriage ceremonies for years but our community is excited that our relationships will finally be seen as equal in the eyes of the law. We look forward to many simchot and to signing marriage certificates both here and in our new home.
Marriage equality in New York is a major milestone but our work is not done. Gay marriage still isn’t legal in most states and it isn’t recognized on a federal level. Several thousand of New York City’s homeless youth are LGBTQ, yet funding for LGBTQ homeless youth shelters is consistently under threat. LGBTQ people still face discrimination in employment and housing. There is still a social stigma attached to LGBTQ identities, and we won’t stop fighting until we reach full equality.
Let’s build on the momentum of this incredible milestone, and reach for even greater heights!
